Summary

Under the supervision of the Superintendent, the Elementary Principal will act as the chief executive of the school, investing in responsibility of supervisory and administrative authority over the prescribed educational program and all activities in the school building and on the school grounds.

The principal is involved in the development of the educational program of the entire school district and must be knowledgeable in all phases of elementary education and administration.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Supervision received from Superintendent and Director of Elementary Education. Will direct staff in assigned school when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Administers, directs, coordinates, and supervises the authorized instructional program to secure quality educational best suited to the needs of each student.
  • Acts as coordinator for curriculum design, research projects and studies, pilot and trial programs as they relate to effective education in their school and service on district-wide curriculum committees.
  • Oversees the arrival and dismissal of students, while also assuring students are released to the authorized location/individual.
  • Keeps Central Office informed of activities, programs, etc.
  • Aids with in-service programs.
  • Provides for the health, safety and welfare of students, teachers, and other employees while in the school or on school grounds.
  • Develops and maintains a school climate conducive to good teacher morale.
  • Establishes procedures for the care of injured and/or sick students when at school.
  • Assists the Director of Human Resources in the selection, recruitment, and placement of teaching staff.
  • Creates a school atmosphere conducive to good citizenship, attitudes and patterns of socially acceptable behavior.
  • Guides and oversees 504 plans.
  • Provides primary liaison between their school attendance area and the Board of Education.
  • Provides educational innovations to the Superintendent.
  • Promotes the establishment and/or maintenance of a parents’ organization in the school community and assumes a leadership role within it.
  • Guides and counsels’ students, teachers, and parents in areas of specific concern and need and utilizes all available resources and data in planning applicable procedures for solution.
  • Initiates and submits all requests for instructional materials and equipment for their building.
  • Issues informational bulletins of significance to teachers, students and parents on areas of school and district activities.
  • Schedules, coordinates, directs, and supervises the auxiliary instructional services provided to their building.
  • Establishes plans and procedures for the care and maintenance of school property.
  • Observe classes regularly to ensure consistent learning and student growth.
  • Maintains a program of professional self-development through additional college study, readings, conference attendance and visitations.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the Superintendent may assign.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Elementary Administration or Elementary Education preferred.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years successful elementary teaching experience.
  • Experience and working knowledge of elementary assessments
  • Experience leading high-quality professional development for elementary teachers
  • Experience in elementary reading and writing instruction
  • Experience as an Elementary Principal preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Michigan Administrator’s Certificate or Letter of Eligibility
  • Valid Teaching Certificate.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

 

 

Knowledge of:

  • Strong knowledge of elementary education curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Knowledge of educational trends while actively engaging in professional development growth. 
  • Expert knowledge of educational technology and how it can be integrated into lessons to enhance pupils learning experience.  
  • Knowledge and understanding of district requirements and policies.  
  • Knowledge of Title I and At-Risk regulations and programming.
  • Knowledge of elementary literacy instruction and methods required
  • Knowledge of elementary assessments and data analysis
  • Strong knowledge of principles and intricacies of the teaching and learning process.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of education administration.

 

Ability to:

  • Provide visionary leadership helping to create a positive inclusive culture.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignment. 
  • Problem solve when addressing numerous potential student needs and varying classroom situations.  
  • Utilize mathematical concepts related to secondary education such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.  
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing to help facilitate effective productive discussions.  
  • Establish and maintain positive effective relationships with students, colleagues, and parents to help promote a supportive learning environment.  
  • Engage with community to help build future potential partnerships.
  • Speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.

Physical Demands:

Must possess mobility to perform moderate physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The classification supports indoor and outdoor programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in the assigned program area. Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

Environmental Elements:

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. May be exposed to communicable illnesses, blood, and body fluids. Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

Working Conditions:

Incumbents may be assigned an on-call and irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, and evenings.
