Hours: 1.0 FTE

 

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid Michigan Professional Teacher Certification with a special education endorsement.
  • Additional endorsements preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in Education or a field of study related to special education;
  • A minimum of five (5) years of satisfactory teaching experience, not less than three (3) years of which shall be teaching in a special education classroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively/cooperatively with student, parent, and staff.
  • Proven employment record illustrating warmth, patience, consistency, tolerance, empathy, trust, reliability, strong moral character, good attendance, sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Regular and reliable in person attendance is an essential job function. 
  • Knowledge base in learning theory and the nature/cause of learning problems.
  • Review and evaluate special education programs to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, as well as district policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and evidence-based interventions used in teaching exceptional children.
  • Proficiency in assessment and diagnostic skills to determine student learning needs.
  • Skilled in data analysis and progress monitoring of student performance.
  • Ability to adapt instruction for diverse learning needs.
  • Consultation with teachers to increase their capacity to provide instructional support to struggling learners.
  • Consultation with support/ancillary staff with regard to IEP development and programming.
  • Strong interpersonal and rapport-building skills with students, staff, parents, and administrators alike.
  • Instructing and modeling evidence-based interventions for the benefit of teaching staff.
  • Coordinate and apply for special accommodations for state assessments like M-STEP and PSAT/SAT.
  • Knowledge of recent developments and current literature in the field of special education and evidence-based instruction.
  • Ability to plan and conduct training conferences pertaining to special education for administrators and teachers.
  • Exemplary organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Sound oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to self-reflect and demonstrate flexibility in practice.
  • Demonstrate creativity in thinking and sound problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence in decision-making.
  • Other duties as assigned by administrator.

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts; ability to compute percentages and to interpret graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Personal computer skills necessary. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The position frequently requires non-stop typing on the computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Some extended hours are frequently required of the employee.
